It was this bone 'falling out' that allowed/caused Akhillies' death. He replaced the astragale (an ankle bone that was used as dice in games and divination) with that of a deceased giant's that Peleus dug up. One variation of this story has Peleus grabbing the baby Akhillies from the flames and the only damage to the child was a burned ankle.

When Peleus saw Akhillies in the flames he cried out and offended Thetis who then left him.

In some versions Akhillies was the seventh son of Thetis and Peleus, the other sons did not survive Thetis placing them in fire to burn away their mortality. Demigod doesn't necessarily have to mean an immortal, it usually just means the offspring of a deity and a mortal, though sometimes it can refer to a minor god or a mortal who achieved godhood. Akhillies was both a mortal and a demigod.
